2026 World Cup Title Odds: Argentina Surges After Historic Comeback

The knockout stage never disappoints, and it doesn't appear like it will at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. 

With just over 10 minutes remaining in its Round of 16 match against Egypt, it looked like defending champion Argentina was going home. 

Then, one of the biggest comebacks in World Cup history happened. Trailing 2-0 in the 78th minute, Argentina miraculously scored three goals in the span of 13 minutes. 

After missing a penalty in the first half, Lionel Messi more than redeemed himself, as his assist and goal in a four-minute window leveled the score. Enzo Fernández's 93rd minute goal was the game winner. 

At one point in this match, Argentina's odds were as high as +2000 on the moneyline and +4500 to win the title. Now, after its historic comeback, Argentina is +390 to win the World Cup.

The Favorite: France beat Sweden 3-0 in the Round of 32, and then defeated Paraguay 1-0 in the Round of 16, in what was a more hotly-contested match than people anticipated. France is outscoring opponents 14-2 so far this tournament, and all three of its superstars — Kylian Mbappé, Ousmane Dembélé and Michael Olise — have already made their marks. Morocco is next for France in the quarterfinals. 

Spain and Belgium Rise: Spain emerged victorious from a matchup between two top-five teams in the FIFA rankings, taking down Portugal 1-0 on a stoppage time (90'+1) goal from Mikel Merino. Spain gets back to the quarterfinals for the first time since its championship run in 2010. It is now unbeaten in 35 straight games (26-9-0, W-D-L) since March 2024, tying the longest undefeated run in team history (also had a 35-game streak snapped by the U.S. in the 2009 Confederations Cup semifinals). With the win, Spain has still yet to allow a goal in this tournament. In the quarterfinals, Spain will face Belgium, after it dominated the USA in the Round of 16, winning 4-1. Belgium advances to the quarterfinals of the World Cup for the first time since 2018, the fourth time overall, and the third time in the last four editions of the tournament (1986, 2014, 2018, 2026).
